Bill Kristol says the Democrats will probably win because they are much better at it than the Republicans.
Back around 1972, the Democrats found a new way of doing business in Washington. This method they found involved hammering away at an unsuspecting opponent until he was so browbeaten he would leave his position in disgrace. The results of this was aggressive politicians would gain popularity, win landslide elections and become the darlings of the media for supposedly saving the Constitution.
Of course, what we are talking about here is Watergate. Before Watergate politics was mostly done by framing an argument and letting the people decide which side of this argument they favor. Yes, there were gutter politics involved. There was abundant name calling and belittling even in the old days of the Union. However, most candidates running for office understood and respected the fact elections were the tool through which the American people spoke and to these respectable politicians, this right was sacred.
Some politicians accused their opponents of having mistresses and illegitimate children. Yes, there was mudslinging even back in the good old days. The difference in campaigns of yore is each campaigner stood for something. In fact, most of them only campaigned on these things they believed in. In other words, even though gutter politics was used, it was not used by everyone, certainly not an entire political party against another entire political party. However, the modern Democrat party has refined this sleazy form of politics to such a fine art, there are some people who actually think it works!
Over the last 30 years, Democrats have stood for less and less and have used sensationalism against their opponents more and more. The only way they get away with this is they are aided and abetted by the mainstream media; an entity who seems to hate Republicans as much as they do.
Generally speaking, Democrats accuse Republicans of wanting water that is undrinkable and air that is un-breathable. They also paint a picture of all Republican politicians as being rich and have gotten so by stealing money from others, usually people who are needy. Democrats want everyone to think Republicans are against health care because they want to see people suffer a great deal of pain and die slow, ignominious deaths. Furthermore, as these deaths are occurring, Republicans peek around the corner at these poor suffering souls wringing their hands and gleefully smiling at the pain they see they have induced in these poor dying needy people, who are many times just young children.
In the meantime, Democrats don’t claim to be in favor of too much other than wanting to stop these lecherous and odious individuals, known as Republicans, from doing their dirty deeds. Of course, all the while, the mainstream, or as Sarah Palin would say, lame stream media, is in the Democrat corner embellishing their stories of Republican treachery and hate.
What confuses me is how anyone falls for this. It is very disheartening, or his BHO might say, disenchanting that anyone would vote for people who have such diabolical minds as to believe anyone would think all in the opposing party are capable of making Simon Legree look like Santa Claus. As Paul Ryan says, “we need to have an adult conversation.” At this time in our history it doesn’t look like it is at all possible anyone can have an adult conversation with the average Democrat politician.
Still, there are pundits who believe these tactics will work for the Democrats because they are so good at using them. One such person is Republican pundit Bill Kristol. We can only hope he’s wrong. If he isn’t, our country is in a lot of trouble on many levels!
